This page describes how to add a network printer to a Windows PC. For a short general description of the printing systems and list of printers available at DTU Compute, please refer to this link.

Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit), Windows XP and Vista 32 bit are supported using the winprint server. Vista 64 bit is not supported and must use the optional method described below. Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit) is not fully tested but basic printing features has been tested successfully.

There is a minor difference installing printers whether your PC is joined DTU's Windows domain (win.dtu.dk, in short "WIN") or not. Pressing Windows key + Pause/Break key will open System Information. If "win.dtu.dk" is set under Domain, your PC is joined the domain.

How to add a network printer from a domain Windows computer

Follow this procedure to add a network printer to your Windows computer joined the WIN domain:

1. Go to "Start" → "Run" (or press Windows Key + R)
2. Type \\comp-winprint.win.dtu.dk and press Enter
3. Find the printer you want to use i the list shown (Printer names explained here).
4. Right click it and choose ""connect". Printer driver will now be installed - could take a couple of minutes.

How to add a network printer from a non-domain Windows computer

Follow this procedure to add a network printer to your Windows computer not joined the WIN domain:

1. Go to "Start" → "Run" (or press Windows Key + R)
2. Type \\comp-winprint.win.dtu.dk and press Enter
3. You will be prompted to authenticate to the WIN domain using win\DTU-loginname and your password. Same as for DTU Portalen.
4. Find the printer you want to use i the list shown (Printer names explained here).
5. Right click it and choose "Connect". Printer driver will now be installed - could take a couple of minutes.

Optional method for adding network printers

To add a network printer to a non-domain Windows computer or a Windows Vista 64bit, follow this method. It will use another print server (CUPS), and will require that a universal or specific printer driver has already been downloaded and unpacked or already installed on you PC (**)

1. Find the name of the printer you want to add. CUPS printer names does NOT start with "comp-". Printer list can be found here
2. Open the Windows guide for adding printer.
3. Click "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"
4. Click "The printer that I want isn't listed"
5. Choose "Select a shared printer by name"
6. Type in the Printer URL in this format and use the name of the printer found in step 1: http://cups.imm.dtu.dk:631/printers/printername (remember to remove "comp-" form the name)
7. After clicking Next you will be prompted for the printer driver files on your PC.
8. Click on "Have Disk..." then click "Browse" and go to the location of extracted driver folder
9. Select the driver that matches the printer model or use the universal driver (i.e. Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6) and click "OK".
10. Set as "Default Printer" if needed and click "Finish"

Windows 7: Open "Devices and Printer" either from Start menu or from Control Panel. Then click "Add a printer"

Windows Vista: Open "Printers" (Start Menu → Control Panel → Hardware and Sound. If Control Panel is in "Classic View" just click "Printers")

The available drivers found on this page required for using the optional way of adding printers, will only supports Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit) and Windows XP 32 bit and cannot guarantee that all printing features will be available for a given printer (i.e. stapling might not work). For further assistance please contact itsupport.

When choosing the right driver file in step 9: if several .inf files are found in the folder, choosing any of them should present the universal/global driver in the drivers available (next window).
