This guide is for users at DTU Compute only
This page describes how to add a network printer to a Windows PC. For a short general description of the printing systems and list of printers available at DTU Compute, please refer to this link.
For non-domain Windows PCs an optional way of adding network printers is described below.
There is a minor difference in installing printers whether your PC is joined DTU's Windows domain (win.dtu.dk, in short "WIN") or not. Pressing Windows key + Pause/Break key will open System Information. If "win.dtu.dk" is set under Domain, your PC has joined the domain.
If your still in doubt please contact ITSupport.
How to add a network printer from a Windows computer joined to DTU Windows domain (WIN)
Follow this procedure to add a network printer to your Windows computer joined the WIN domain:
- Go to "Start" → "Run" (or press Windows Key + R)
- Type \\comp-winprint.win.dtu.dk and press Enter
- Find the printer you want to use i the list shown (Printer names explained here).
- Right-click it and choose "Connect". The printer driver will now be installed - could take a couple of minutes.
How to add network printers for non-domain, non-registered (using VPN), or non-DTU-Compute Windows computers
This is not a fully supported way of adding printers to a Windows PC (primarily for non-domain Windows), as it cannot guarantee that all printing features will be available (i.e. stapling might not work). For further assistance using the optional procedure please contact it support.
This setup will print from an alternative print server (CUPS) and will require that a universal or specific printer driver has already been downloaded and unpacked or already installed on your PC (*)
- Find the name of the printer you want to add. CUPS printer names do NOT start with "comp-". Printer list can be found here
- Open the Windows guide for adding a printer manually. On Windows 10: Open "Settings" → "Devices" → "Printers & Scanners" and click "Add a printer or scanner"
- Click "The printer that I want isn't listed" (scroll to the bottom)
- Choose "Select a shared printer by name"
- Type in the Printer URL in this format and use the name of the printer found in step 1: '''http://cups.compute.dtu.dk:631/printers/printername''' (remember to remove "comp-" form the name)
- After clicking Next you will be prompted for the printer driver files on your PC.
- Click on "Have Disk..." then click "Browse" and go to the location of extracted driver folder
- Select the the universal/global PCL6 driver (i.e. Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6) and click "OK".
- Set as "Default Printer" if needed and click "Finish"
- [if it is a HP color printer] Click Printer Properties → Device Settings → Device Type and change it from Auto Detect to Color
