Summary

The SunRay servers have been updated with new hardware and some new SW versions.

Details

The 3 SunRay servers, sunray1-3, have been replaced by 2 new SunRay servers, SunRay4-5. The 2 new servers are based on T5220 with 8 core CPUs and 32 GB RAM. This should provide some additional capacity (especially RAM wise), hence we should avoid some of the situations where the servers have been loaded excessively. The SunRay SW has been upgraded to the newest version which should provide better performance and better support for SunRay 2f terminals.

The 3 old sunray servers are still running but are no longer been used as sessions servers. However, they are expected to be closed down within a month.

Software updates

(the updates apply for sunfire as well but not sunray1-3)

  1. The thinlinc server has been upgraded to version 2.1.0.
  2. SUN studio is no longer installed - only version 12 is installed and is now in the system wide PATH.
  3. Blastwave aka /opt/csw has been updated:
  • Emacs can now handle bigger files
  • When opening an file from with-in emacs (using C-x C-f) one can no longer use SPACE for filename completion. Use TAB instead. (SPACE is now considered as a simple character).
  • Opening the same file as in the current buffer (typical because the buffer might have been changed by an external program), one could before simply type' C-x C-f 'RETURN. This no longer works, type C-x C-f M-n. Simply typing C-x C-f will give a dired listing of the current directory.
  • The command C-SHIFT-BACKSPACE now deletes the whole line
  • The latex packages auctex is now version 18.54. With this version it is possible to view formulas in-line in emacs.
  • Octave is now version 3.0.0
