Backup of data in Google account

You can use Google's service 'Takeout' and choose the data you want to archive: https://www.google.com/settings/takeout/downloads

You will get an email when the archive is ready so you can download the .zip file.

For Drive

Note that files other people have shared with you are not included. To include them in the archive, you need to copy them to your own Drive first.

Another possibility for backing up Google Drive is installing Drive on a PC that is backed up and making sure the area is backed up, see under Backup on the Main page

For Gmail

The .zip file contains an .mbox file (you can choose to make archives for different labels with Takeout, if you do not want it in one big folder).

You can open the file in Thunderbird on Windows, Linux and MAC (in traditional Linux Mail mail -f, the whole archive is seen as one very long mail). You can transfer the mail to Outlook/Exchange through Thunderbird, otherwise you need a third party product to convert the file to .pst format for Outlook, these are generally not free for professional use.

Read your mails in Thunderbird or transfer to Outlook/Exchange

Thunderbird can be installed on Windows, Linux and MAC. This description is for Windows, but the procedure is very similar on other systems. If you already use Thunderbird go to step 3.

1. Download an install Thunderbird (if you do not use it already)

2. Create a fake account in Thunderbird like test@gmail.com. Do not give a password.

3. Find the local folder directory: Under View Setting for This Account; Server Settings; Local Directory. It will look something like this: C:\Users\leho\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\k45yn1f5.default\Mail\Local Folders

4. Close Thunderbird and copy your .mbox file to the 'Local Folder' directory (you have to turn on 'show hidden folders and files'). Maybe rename the file to something like gmail-backup.mbox

5. Open Thunderbird again. When prompted to log in to your fake account, Press 'OK' without entering a password.

6. Your emails should now be available under 'Local Folders'

7. To transfer the mail to Outlook/Exchange open your ordinary Exchange mail account in Thunderbird (see How to set up thunderbird to DTU exchange) and copy the mails from the gmail folder (under local files) to folders in your Exchange account.

For other Google data

Takeout can also be used for Calendar, Youtube and other Google services
