Steve Jobs avgår som vd för Apple

Mikael Markander

'August 24, 2011

Letter from SteveJobs
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have alwayssaid if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resignas CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far asmy successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’sbrightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have madesome of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve'

August 4, 2009Very interesting article on the subject: Windose7 or not - pdf-file available here.

July 16, 2009 I was told that Firefox was the ultimate browser and subsequently installed it on my MacBook. Yes - it runs (and this IS very important) but I have nonetheless the feeling, that "if it is free - then who can you blame if it is not working?" And even though this is beeing sarcastic the evident answer is: yourself! SO I have checked it, read up on it, and tweeked it a bit. [/User:Jwa/Trimmin'_Firefox These] ideas all worked for me - and made the "get-it-for-free"-image a bit less obvious in my point off view. Not that it replaced my Safari - oh no !! ;-)

June 25, 2009 After a user-request i jumped into the "Mac OSX 10.5.7 upgrade caused my computer to ---" discussion. Evidently after updating the OS the computer in question "froze" and wad unable to contact. As if it hibernated. I came across an official Apple workaround claming the SMU (System Management Unit) was to blame.Thisshow you how to reset - and it actually works (for now :-). Machines that could be affected are: iMac G5 20" amd 17" - so DO check out those manufacture knowledge bases - they mad the stuff originally!

June 16, 2009 - SUN has a product called VirtualBox and ONE great advantage here is that it is free :-) I have just thrown a W7RC on it and it seems to run very well indeed - more to follow.

May 18, 2009 - the IMAP issue takes a funny turn ( see my article about MobileMe ): After having changed my private mail (currently read in MacMail) to IMAP i should be able to access the same "database" from both my iPhone (I have changed the account to IMAP), and my MacBook. However - if i read the mail on my iPhone BEFORE accessing it woth my MacBook - the "from" and "subject" fields are empty?? When approaching incoming mail the otherway around nothing seems to be the problem: The mail in MacMail has the proper fields - and so does the iPhone. Go figure !! ??

May 1, 2009 - getting work done. Look'in in to Apples MobileMe-[/User:Jwa/Mac's_at_DTU_Compute/MobileMe_-_what_is_it MobileMe - what is it good for?]

Later that same day, 19:14 to be exact- OK out off fairness I then have to bring this - and yes, it is still in Danish.

March 17, 2009 - I just have to bring this - and I promise not to comment. "News" concerning IT

March 12, 2009 -Again I am pounded by the fact that even the most obvious things not always get the attention they need. But then again beeing and working at Informatics (now: DTU Compute) makes you wonder if most people know what "informatics" also are? I learned from wikipedia:

Informatics is the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. Informatics studies the structure, algorithms, behavior, and interactions of natural and artificial systems that store, process, access and communicate information.

OK - what about information then? - and a link and a click later were:

Information as a concept has a diversity of meanings, from everyday usage to technical settings. Generally speaking, the concept of information is closely related to notions of constraint, communication, control, data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, mental stimulus, pattern, perception, and representation.

Aha!! SO - DTU Informatics (now: DTU Compute) should be a place where people know abount communication = the exchange of knowledge.

Hence this "trip" off mine. In Building 325 - room 213 we have a very nice setup of Videoconference equipment - and a very nice setup of an electronic whiteboard, currently connected to an in situ Windows PC, but not restricted to that one PC. You can bring your own, and - IF YOU HAVE BOOKED THE ROOM AT THE RECEPTION IN 321 - go ahead.

One setup could be You would like to have a videoconference with participants from other locations, anywhere in the world.
You could off course do this from your own laptop, and Skype/Talk away, but in case there are more off you perhaps the setup would be pleasing.
You could also have a presentation that You would like to share (interactively so that you both can contribute) with people in other locations - again anywhere in the world - OR you might even want to combine the two things.

Imagine a student - currently in Spain - beeing examinated here, or an examination here watched simultaniously from Chile and Switzerland with adience/censors placed anywhere.

We have the equipment - so use it! Start by reading this page. If You are with so far, good.

Now, I was thinking about this a second time, and up came THE LAW, and diffent ways of exploiting this: is the viewer in Botswana allowed to record the session, and what about the knowledge shared in the conference? Well - let me think about that, and get right back at you. More will follow.

February 26. 2009 - I have it running - for a beta it is very good - check it out! ->promo-safari-20090224.jpg

http://www.apple.com/safari/

There are things Imiss though: the "old" STOP LOADING button is nolonger part part off the Toolbar. And on some occasions my OS seems to be in doubt - or late.

But on some points the communications with other applications have improved - so I happily play along :-)

February 25. 2009 - more on the Vista v. 7even discussion - and I couldn't agree more - read you copy here.

still: February 16. 2009 - Again - from Techrepublic.com regarding the next Windose platform, and should Vista be in there too?

Most experts recommend the Windows Vista route for a variety of reasons, which include:

  • Windows 7 is similar to Windows Vista, so users upgrading to Windows 7 directly from Windows Vista will need less time to adjust.
  • Organizations experiencing problems migrating to Windows Vista will experience similar problems if they upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows XP. So, they might as well work through those issues now.
  • You can keep users working on Windows XP while testing applications on Windows Vista. Later, the upgrade to Windows 7 should be reasonably trouble-free because you worked through incompatibility issues in Windows Vista.

On the other hand, as IT budgets shrink and Windows XP continues to get the job done, it will be almost impossible to justify the cost of upgrading to Windows Vistajustto make it easier to migrate to Windows 7.

The deal breaker is Microsoft’s decisionnotto offer migration tools for the upgrade. If you were hoping the trip to Windows 7 via Windows Vista would be less bumpy, you can just stay on the Windows XP stagecoach — it won’t make any difference.

As for 7, I am glad its still in the beta because MS still hasent gotten it right. We need an OS for work! not window dressing! Most of my clients are small bussiness and contractors. In this economy they can't see the benfit of buying or upgrading to an OS that cost 3 times more then XP, and all there getting is a pretty interface..

Well - the testing on Vista sounds right - and then wait for 7even to be distributed to the clients.

February 16. 2009 - just had to add a bit off information regarding the latest book I read - Google Hacks. [/User:Jwa/Google_Hacks The page] is in Danish. Siden er på dansk, men indeholder flere gode Google Hacks = tips til søgning på Internettet.

February 3. 2009 - Why not just format the d.... harddisk and install once more from the top! Well I actually did, and I think it did pay of. Read my notes on the matter [/User:Jwa/Mac's_at_DTU_Compute/Format_c:_!! here].

January 22. 2009 - MS Entourage v. MS Exchange Server.

My head of section the other day asked if I had ever noticed delaying within MS Entourage (the MS Outlook for Mac) recieving e-mails. I could honestly say that I hadn’t. But he then showed me - and together we opserved how the Entourage seemed to be OK fine and connected and at the same time NOT recieving any e-mail, while on the same Mac we opened a RDC to a Windows Terminal Server Session, and the Outlook there had recieved several e-mail - and still was while observing!
I then started researching, and came across THISolde article. In here the main points are that there seemed to be a issue between Exchange and Entourage - or at least: there seemed to have been.
While announcing to my collegueaes that I wanted to go deeper into this on the weekly informationmeeting within the section I sat and flipped throug the Spaces on my Mac.
I had just changes the keyboard shortcut for changeing between Spaces from Apple+Arrow to Alt+Arrow. This was still feeling unnatural (old habbits dye hard) so while on the Entourage application I faultly pressed Apple+Arrow, and came up with a new feature! How very nice - I then had to investigate - my brief to the others was over and I was back in "listening-mode" But somehow this triggering new options within Entourage made "it" feel bad - and "it" suddenly hanged!
Nothing wrong with the other applications, so - Entourage down, and up again. And - Lo! an Behold, ERRORINTHEDATABASE!!

Well Imust admit Igot so nervous, that Isimply had to follow the instructions on-screen, and FORGOT to take the pictures ##€(XZ)=X=)"#€! - YES I know. But I looked something like this (shot taken later - as you can see from the double-double back-up:

Picture 5.pngSo off Iwent - Rebuild Database. And boy did that take a long time. Then I verifyed. That too took long time :-)

I the went for a Compact Database and then another verify - and I waited, and waited - and finally my mailbox was OK.

This however lead to the thought that there might be some issues with the two databases coliding - but let me at least start by looking into the Exchange Server regaring Disk I/O, RPC and CurrentDisk Queue Length.

And not to forget: How could it be that my system told me I had an exchange mailbox off242266 KBwhen my MacBook showed me this:Picture 1.png

January 21. 2009 - this from Techrepublic.com:

Michael Krigsman takes issue with a Forrester Research blog post that pushes virtually all blame for IT failures onto technology buyers.

——————————————————————————————————————-

This is a guest post fromMichael Krigsmanof TechRepublic’s sister site ZDNet. You can follow Michael on his ZDNet blogIT Project Failures, or subscribe to theRSS feed.

AForrester Researchblog post pushing virtually all blame for IT failures onto technology buyers caught me by surprise because it doesn’t correspond to real world complexities of why IT projects fail.

The post asserts:

Project failure is rarely the fault of your IT services partner - even if it is, it is your fault for not managing the process effectively and pulling them up before it turns into a failure. The only time when the partner is to blame is when they promise to do something that simply is not possible - and again, they are probably just responding to your impossible requests.

Such statements reflect a simplistic and inaccurate view of the dynamics driving over-budget, late, and under-performing projects.

The project failures analysis

Service providers play an important role in the enterprise IT ecosystem, providing at least three important benefits to the market:

  • Specialized technical skills
  • Flexible labor supply, which can expand or contract based on customer’s project demand
  • Best practices and experience for executing complex projects

In the best situations, third-party system integrators and consultants bring a large body of knowledge to the customer, which benefits from the provider’s broad experience across multiple engagements. Consulting companies implement technology on a regular basis, making them specialized experts and a great source of detailed implementation knowledge.

However, problems arise when customer and service provider incentives and goals don’t align in important ways.

IT Devil’s Triangle.Virtually all IT projects involve three parties: customer, technology provider, and integrator. Each of these groups has its own independent set of goals, which leads to a series of interlocking, overlapping, and sometimes mutually exclusive agendas. Customers want low prices and top-quality work; consultants seek high margins and large projects; and technology vendors often bow toward system integrators since consultants are a source of vendor deal flow. Understanding why IT projects fail requires analyzing relationships among these three groups.

The best service providers place customer interests first and strive to contain costs. This generates good will, happy clients, and long-term relationships. However, consultants naturally prefer larger projects, which lead to more billable hours and higher profits, sometimes creating a conflict of interest with the client.

Sometimes, consultants are reluctant to push back against poorly considered client requests and actions that create higher billing without adding value to a project. For example, here’s what I wrote aboutDeloitte Consulting’s rolein contributing to the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) problems printing teacher paychecks:

I suspect Deloitte pussy-footed [pushing back against the customer], to avoid pissing off this big client. Deloitte, you’re paid handsomely to get this stuff done and you are now failing. If the LAUSD isn’t supplying information needed to fully configure and test the system (which I strongly suspect is part of the problem), then take stronger steps. Ifyourpaychecks were on the line, you’d call the president of the United States, if that’s what it took.

Single-mindedly casting blame toward any one side of the IT Devil’s Triangle is a losing proposition that fails to reflect the deeper causes of failure. Although I respect Forrester and its team of analysts, the post reflects a one-sided view that wrongly pushes blame exclusively to customers.

Well - I guess thats business in a nutshell - but nevertheless interesting.

January 9. 2009 - HAPPY NEW YEAR - things can only get better:windows_7.png

December 10. 2008 OK - basically my political point of view is Radikal ( and this is then the Danish political party places in the middle - then with two ways to go depending on what favours are the best :-) And after re-re-consideration I will now make this my primary DTU-site. Must fix a link from the other one soon.

After due consederation I have closed down my initial DTU Compute-blog-page. This is mainly because I dont have the time to maintain it. So for now I just keep my official DTU-Informatics-site. This will hopefully be updated from time-to-time.
